The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (branded and marketed as Samsung Galaxy Note5) is an Android phablet smartphone developed and produced by Samsung Electronics. The Galaxy Note 5, along with theGalaxy S6 Edge+, was unveiled during a Samsung press conference in New York City on 13 August 2015.[7][8] It is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The phone became available in the U.S. on 21 August 2015.[4]
Similar to the Galaxy S6, the construction of the device was revamped, with a metal unibody frame, glass instead of faux leather backing, and a newer, metal stylus. The back of the device is curved on both sides for easy handling. Due to the newer design, the Note 5 is the first in the Note series of phones that does not have a user-removable battery, nor a micro SD card slot. And the battery shrank for the first time, (from 3200 to 3000 mAh) in order to keep the design as slim as possible. The Note 5 also does not have the MHL Micro-HDMI output. The Note 5 is also one of the phones compatible with Samsung's Gear VR.

Sales

The Galaxy Note 5 was first released in TaiwanThailand, and Singapore on 15 August 2015,[9][10] and became available in the U.S on 21 August 2015 from all four major carriers.[4] However, Samsung has no plans to sell the device in Europe in 2015, and is selling the Galaxy S6 Edge+ there instead.[11] On 23 August, Samsung announced that over 75,000 units of the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ were sold in Koreawithin 3 days of its release.[12][13]
On October, Samsung introduced two additional color variants of the device in South Korea.[14] On December, Samsung launched a "Winter Edition" of the device which offers the internal storage of 128 GB and it is sold in South Korea by SK Telecom and KT Corporation.[15]

Reception[edit]

In The Verge review, the author stated "The design is stunning and humane, but there are trade-offs". The phone was given the score of 8.7 out of 10 praising the display, performance and the stylus but criticized the non user-removable battery, no availability of 128 GB internal storage option and MicroSD card expansion and also its price.[16]

Problems

S Pen Backward Insertion

It has been noticed that if the user accidentally inserts the S Pen backwards in the device, it could result in permanent damage to the stylus and the device where the spring mechanism of the stylus becomes damaged or gets stuck in the stylus slot. This can also damage the S Pen detection feature, rendering the stylus useless for the device.[17][18] However, Samsung was aware of this issue and insisted that the users should read the instruction manual before using the device.[19][20][21] The later models come with a warning label on the phone wrap to advise the user on how to insert the S Pen.[22] The most recent models come with an updated S Pen mechanism inside the device that prevents the S Pen from getting damaged when inserted the wrong way.

In popular culture

The Note 5 was featured on Ariana Grande's music video, "Focus".[23]
