Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are upcoming Android smartphones manufactured and marketed by Samsung Electronics. The S7 series is a successor to the 2015 Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, and was officially unveiled on 21 February 2016 during a Samsung press conference at Mobile World Congress, with a European and North American release scheduled for 11 March 2016.[1][2]As with the S6, the S7 is produced in a standard model, as well as an "Edge" variant whose screen is wrapped along the sides of the device.
The Galaxy S7 is an evolution of the prior year's model, restoring design traits from the Galaxy S5 such as IP certification for water and dust protection, as well as expandable storage.

Specifications[edit]

Hardware[edit]

The Galaxy S7's hardware design is largely identical to that of the S6, retaining its metal and glass chassis, but with refinements such as a flatter home button, and a thinner protrusion for the camera. Both models will be available in dark grey and gold colors; a silver version is exclusive to the S7 Edge. The S7 and S7 Edge are IP68-certified for dust and water protection; unlike theGalaxy S5, the S7's ports are sealed and thus, do not have protective flaps.[1][2]
All Galaxy S7 devices feature 4 GB of RAM. International models are equipped with a Samsung 8890 octa-core system-on-chip, while North American models utilize a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (the Galaxy S6 used Exynos chips worldwide due to overheating issues regarding the Snapdragon 810) with quad-core Kyro CPU and Adreno 530 GPU.[3] The S7 includes either 32 or 64 GB of internal storage (in most markets only the 32 GB model will be available). The micro SD card slot was restored, enabling expansion of storage capacity.[1] In some markets the micro SD slot can be used for dual sim.[4] Both the S7 and S7 Edge feature a 1440p Super AMOLED display; the S7 has a 5-1-inch panel, while the S7 Edge now uses a larger 5.5-inch panel. As with the prior model, the S7 Edge's screen is curved along the side bezels of the device.[1][2] Both models also have larger batteries in comparison to the S6, with 3000 mAh and 3600 mAh capacity respectively and support for wireless charging.[1][2] The S7 features a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with a "Dual Pixel" image sensor and f/1.7 aperture lens.[1][2]

Software[edit]

The Galaxy S7 ships with Android 6.0 "Marshmallow" and Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz software suite. A new "Always On" functionality displays a clock and notifications on-screen when the device is in standby; the display is turned off completely if the device's proximity sensor detects that it is in an enclosed space such as a pocket. Samsung claims this feature would only consume half a percentage of battery capacity per-hour.[1][2] New widget panes can be displayed on the edge of the S7 Edge, in "Edge Single" and wider "Edge Single Plus" sizes.[5]

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge are Android smartphones manufactured and marketed by Samsung Electronics. The S6 and S6 Edge jointly serve as successors to the Galaxy S5. The smartphones were officially unveiled in a press conference at Mobile World Congress on 1 March 2015. Alongside the S6, Samsung also unveiled the S6 Edge, a variant whose screen is wrapped along the sides of the device; the curvature is usable for several additional features. The Galaxy S6 was released on 10 April 2015 in 20 countries.[5]
Although the overall design of the Galaxy S6 still features some similarities to prior models, the construction of the device itself was revamped, with a metal unibody frame and glass backing instead of plastic. The devices also introduced an improved camera, a streamlined user interface, support for both major wireless charging standards, and support for a mobile payments platform that allows the device to emulate the magnetic strip from a credit card. The S6 features other hardware improvements as well, including a 1440p display, a new in-house system-on-chip that utilizes a 14 nm FinFET manufacturing process, and an improved fingerprint scanner.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the devices' upgraded build quality over prior models, along with improvements to their displays, performance, camera, and other changes. However, Samsung's decision to remove the ability to expand their storage or remove the battery was panned as being potentially alienating to power users, and the S6 Edge was also panned for not making enough use of its curved display to justify its increased cost over the standard Samsung Galaxy S6. Many software features and hardware features were also removed to make the user experience cleaner. While minimalists liked it, power users were badly dissatisfied.
Another major change is the new font type of the logo.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are two of the devices that are compatible with Samsung's new Virtual reality device, the Samsung Gear VR.
