Norman Thavaud (born 14 April 1987) is a French humourist and blogger known for his short comical YouTube videos. Each of his videos have received at least eight million views, some receiving over twelve million.
Youth[edit]
Norman was born on the 14th of April 1987 in Arras. His mother was a history and geography teacher and his father, Jackie Thavaud, was a cultural promoter and leader of a local cinema school. Norman played saxophone for 7 years in a conservatoire.[1] As a child, he made many videos using his father's camera. Having gained his bacalaureat in 2005, Norman moved to Paris in order to study cinema. He had a succession of jobs before becoming the montage specialist for vidéo2.
Le Velcrou[edit]
Norman met Hugo Dessioux (alias Hugo tout seul) at college and they formed "Le Velcrou" in March 2008. "Le Velcrou" regularly posted comical videos on Dailymotion. Four months later, Marc Jarousseau (alias Kemar), a friend from university joined team3.
Thanks to this comic group, Norman met Cyprien (Monsieur Dream), another video blogger, who appeared in a few of the Velcrou's videos. In December of the same year, Cyprien created "Super Mega Noël", a short humorous film about Christmas. Cyprien featured other bloggers, including Hugo and Norman.
In July 2009, Norman was awarded his degree in cinematography from the université Paris-1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.[2] The crew broke up in October 2010. Since then, they have been producing solo videos.
An increasing popularity[edit]
Norman, a young humourist, produces videos
At the end of 2010, Norman launched into a new format: short video sequences about 4 minutes long where he embodied “Mister average “and dealt with daily subjects like his first one-man video “Table tennis club”. Two months later, he posted his most popular video “The bilinguals” which was a great success and marked the beginning of his notoriety. It has since been surpassed by “Now, I have Google”, itself surpassed by “The Apple addict” which is today his video which counts the most views. He records his videos in his Parisian flat where he lives with his flatmate and his two cats (Sergi which sometimes appeared in his videos, and Becassine).
His videos viewed several millions times, permit him to be paid by the YouTube internet website and to catch national media attention that describes him as a “web phenomenon “. Eric Loret, a reporter, describes him and his partners, Cyprien and Hugo Dessioux who launched into the same format that Norman, as being “young artists really good in business and communication handling all strategies with the biggest candour “.
A guest-star on the internet
As the most popular you tuber and the 2ND according to the number of his followers, many video makers and internet friends invite him to be a part of their videos. Logically, he goes to one-man videos of former members of his group: Hugo Dessioux and Marc Jarousseau on their YouTube channel. Cyprien, the most well known in terms of number of followers has invited him in only one of his videos while they have already performed together when Norman belonged to the Velcrou. We also find him in videos of Mistertel, Mister V, and La Ferme Jerome! or else of the team of “10 minutes à perdre.”(“10 minutes to waste”)
He also appears on TV taking part in several episodes of Very Bad Blagues by the Palmashow on D8 channel. The pair, composed by Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais, is coming from the internet too but their sketches are now broadcast on TV. In December 2011, he was invited to the European Film Festival of Les Arcs with other YouTube stars such as La ferme Jerome! Cyprien, Maxime Musqua, Mistertel and also the Palmashow. On January 12, 2012, he organized the Zapping Amazing, a show at the Grand Rex (Big auditorium in Paris) gather some of his web-humorist friends with whom he played (Palmashow, Kemar, Cyprien, PV Nova, Julfou, Mister V, Volt, Backstage Rodeo, LeGrandJD, Spicy Marguerites and La Ferme Jerome!). They performed again their most famous sketches for the audience. This show (which gathered almost 3.000 persons) was so successful that a tour has been programmed in France from February 5, 2013 to February 15, 2013.
